3394 – Assault in Venezuela – Offshore03

Incident Details: A monohull singlehander departed Grenada for Colombia. Unfortunately bad weather and rough conditions led to equipment failures and some injuries(broken ribs). At position 12-09.3N and 069-34.8W, approximately 40 nmiles from Venezuela and 50nmiles from Aruba at 0330HRs the captain was motorsailing with AIS Tx OFF and only the anchor light showing. No other vessels/lights were visible to the yacht. ||The captain was injured when a bullet crossed from the port side, into the open cockpit enclosure, passed in front of his face and ricocheted off the cockpit enclosure frame and then grazed his hand. No vessels could be seen nearby, no further shots were fired, and no vessel approached. The captain diverted north to Aruba and contacted port control on arrival. He was met by the Coast Guard, three of them boarded, provided assistance in anchoring and took a report. The normal inspections were made. The captain treated his own injuries and did not require medical assistance.

Incident Details: Owners awoke at 0145HRS when the captain of a neighboring yacht knocked on their hull. The neighbors had seen thieves towing the yacht's in-the-water and not locked dinghy. The thieves had cut the painter, and were powering away when the neighbor's yells alerted them. The thieves abandoned the dinghy and it was recovered. A report was made to the marina and the Coast Guard.

Incident Details: Owners of a yacht anchored in Clarke's Court Bay awoke to find that the fuel had been emptied from the integral dinghy tank overnight. The dinghy was locked to the yacht and a locked compartment was left untouched. The thief left the cap off the tank inside the dinghy.

Incident Details: A yacht anchored in Halifax Bay. In the morning they found the line (painter) to their in-the-water and locked dinghy had been cut. The thieves were not successful in this instance. Owners report that they noticed the remains of several other dinghies on the beach.

Incident Details: At about 0400HRS the owner/crew of a yacht berthed on a private dock opposite the marina were awakened when they heard a hissing noise. They discovered their companionway boards (not locked) had been removed. They turned on deck lights and searched the dock area and noticed a blinking light ashore. It was coming from their stolen life raft, which had been deployed in the adjacent vacant lot. The cover on the cockpit plotter/radar display was also stolen as well as all of the cash from a wallet left in a pants pocket in the salon.||The police were called and arrived 2 hours later to take a report. They noticed 2 sets of footprints near the stolen (but recovered) life raft. The police indicated they would survey for video footage.

Incident Details: A Boston Whaler / 25HP Yamaha outboard locked with heavy stainless chain to the dock near IWW/Bobby's was stolen between 0200-0500HRS during a power outage. Video surveillance and dock lighting were not functioning during the outage, a backup generator had failed to start. ||The dinghy was noticed/recovered a few days later outside Nettle Bay on a rocky beach, minus the fuel tanks and with some significant damage. *** A second outboard (15HP Yamaha) was also found there in the surf. It has been flushed and stored safely and is waiting for an owner to identify it. Please contact CSSN with serial number details if you are the owner.
