2982 – Theft in Colombia – Punta Canoas

Incident Details: Owners decided to anchor for the night at 2130HRS at Punto Canoa after a long and tiring sail from Cabo de la Velas. They were the only boat in the anchorage. The crew awoke at 2330HRS when they heard people talking just beside their boat and shining lights into the cockpit. The captain went out and found 5-6 men in a panga claiming to be fishermen who thought they had run aground, and the men began asking many questions. One of them boarded, and asked for food. The captain spoke spanish and provided some food and asked that they leave to avoid problems since the yacht had not yet cleared in. The panga departed.||The next morning the crew found that the genoa furling line had been cut, and removed. A report was made to the marina on their arrival later that day.

Incident Details: The captain of a yacht on a mooring was awakened by noise at 0400HRS, and investigated. Two men were outside his cockpit door and when challenged claimed to be "just fishing because they thought the boat was empty". They did not have any fishing gear, only backpacks. The men left immediately without incident in a small rowboat. ||A report was made the next day to the Coast Guard and Port Captain, who indicated they had suspects and that there had been boardings/theft on several local dive boats the same night.

Incident Details: Owners locked and tied their tender to the dingy dock, and disabled the 25HP engine from starting. Thieves stole 2 dinghy anchors and then set the dinghy adrift. Another cruiser noticed the drifting dinghy and retrieved it, and returned it to the owners.

Incident Details: Owners were not onboard when their 15HP Yamaha was stolen from the stern rail. The thief removed the bolts that held the wooden supports the engine was mounted on/locked to and stole the entire assembly. The theft was reported to the Coast Guard, Port Captain and on the local VHF net.

Incident Details: A cruising couple anchored in Carlisle Bay and took the dinghy ashore and beached it on the side of the resort. They visited the public beach and afterwards were briefly questioned by the resort security guard. A young man in school uniform approached and asked them for "help" to use their phone or a ride to his mother on the other side of the bay. They agreed to a ride and when they were close to the shore the young man grabbed their dry bag and tried to escape, but was thwarted when the shocked cruiser pushed him into the water and retook the dry bag. The youth threatened to shoot them, but apparently had no gun and ran off and joined several other youths on the beach. The cruisers returned immediately to their yacht and departed the next morning.
