| Incident Details | A charter yacht spent the night in Clifton Harbor. At 0530 they found their in-the-water and not locked dinghy was "missing". A search of the shoreline with binoculars at sunrise did not locate it. Shortly thereafter a local arrived at their yacht and told them someone had "found" a dinghy and took them to shore where another man claimed to have "found" the dinghy at Frigate Island (in the dark). A $20US finders fee was offered. The man demanded $500US and refused to return the dinghy until it was paid. The crew contacted their charter company who suggested they pay the fee, and depart immediately. They waited for the bank to open, paid the $500US and the dinghy was surrendered. The police were contacted but did not arrive. They departed. |
